Special notes:
First. if this is your first time here, please
note that these websites are loaded with graphics (pictures), and, especially
"A Picture Guide to Speed Skating", will be slow loaders. Your
patience will be rewarded!
Also, these pages look best
if viewed with a 800x600 desktop setting*, with "true color".
If the sentence above has "true
color" on the next line by itself , your desktop (or "Screen Area") is
set at 640x480.
See notes below for a better
explanation of this.
*Desktop Settings: Many older
websites are set for a 640x480 "desktop. This 640 wide setting
is possibly best for small monitors, which many people still use.
If your desktop (or screen area) is set at 640x480, many things on either
of the websites here will have a strange (although still functional)
appearance, like a word in a sentence all alone on one line, as your browser
wraps the content to fit your 640 wide window. If your desktop
(or screen area) is already set for 600x800, then you
have see many websites that do not fill your screen. This is
normal. But since photographs really look best if a little
larger, I have opted to use the 800 wide window when developing these pages.
How do you check or change your desktop setting?
It's simple!
Note: the following is for Microsoft
Windows. I don't know anything about Mac or other operating
systems.
First, before you do this, get your parents
permission if you are using their computer!
This will save you some grief later!
Second, minimize everything
on your screen, then right click anywhere on your background. This
will bring up a window. Go to the bottom and select "Properties".
This brings up the Display Properties window. At the top, go
the last tab, the Settings Tab. This opens the settings window.
Go to the lower right where it either says "Desktop" (Win95) or "Screen
Area" (Win98). It will have the current setting shown in the
box. If it is not 800x600, then simply drag the slide pointy thing
until it says 800x600. Click OK. The computer will ask
you if you want to keep this setting. Say yes. Note that
you can easily reset this back later if you need to.
Now you have your computer set
at 800x600. Most web pages will look much better than they
did at 640x480, but some of your other programs will have a different look.
You decide if you like it or not.
We hope you enjoy these websites!
